This hours for this position are primarily daylight weekends. It is anticipated that this position will require approximately 20 hours of work each week.
The Yard Jockey is responsible for the movement and spotting of trailers to facilitate the needs of the warehouse in sorting and processing material for shipment or storage as well as timely movements and thorough knowledge of on-hand inventory and positioning.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Ø Maintain a neat and orderly storage lot oriented toward maximizing efficiency in servicing the plant needs
Ø Operate the yard truck in a safe manner during numerous roll-on/roll-off procedures daily involving loaded and empty trailers
Ø Drive and operate vehicles under 15 mph in and around the plant and storage lot/staging area
Ø Cognizant of the fact that the operation is a low mileage severe duty function requiring particular attention to preventative maintenance checks and scheduled and unscheduled vehicle maintenance
Ø Maintain records as assigned including but not limited to record keeping and/or attention to container numbers, gross weights, tare weights and net weights on the log sheets to include source and type of material
Ø Interact professionally with plant personnel
Ø Compliance with all safety regulations at all times
Ø Maintain security of storage areas
Ø Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License
Ø Must have two years previous tractor-trailer driving experience
Knowledge & Skills
Ø Must have the ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical calculations with mental ability to handle receipts, read maps, read road signs, maintain logs, etc.
Ø Must have a working knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems.
Ø Must have knowledge of DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection, and maintenance.
Ø Must be available for around-the-clock trips to accommodate freight movements and must be able to be away from home for reasonable periods of time.
Ø Must meet or exceed the medical standards of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Ø Must satisfactorily pass a pre-employment drug test.
Ø Must be able to sit and remain alert while driving for an aggregate period of up to 11 hours.
Ø Must be able to shift manual transmission and operate foot petals.
Ø Must be able to perform occasional crouching to handle and position freight.
Ø Must be able to enter and exit the vehicle’s cab eight to ten times a day.
Ø Cab floor level is generally from 36 to 66 inches above ground level with entry and exit achieved with the assistance of various configurations of steps and handholds, also required occasional bending, twisting, climbing, squatting, crouching, and balancing.
Ø Must be able to perform occasional pushing of freight weighing up to 100 pounds on a dolly or cart as well as occasional pushing of freight weight more than 100 pounds with or without a mechanical aid.
Ø Must be able to perform occasional pulling of freight weighing up to 100 pounds on a dolly or cart as well as occasional pulling of freight weighing more than 100 pounds with or without a mechanical aid.
Ø Must be able to occasionally perform carrying freight weighing 1-50 pounds of varying size and shape a distance of a least one foot but usually no more than 15 feet.
Ø Must be able to occasionally reach for freight at waist level and occasionally reach for freight above shoulder height or below waist level.
Ø Must be able to occasionally reach above shoulder level, at waist level, and below waist level for maneuvering and directing the controls to operate the truck.
Ø Must be able to assist in the loading and unloading of full trailers of freight weighing as much as 50,000 pounds.
Ø Must be able to install and remove tire chains when required due to inclement weather.
Ø Must be able to properly secure and tarp loads being transported on open-deck trailers.
Ø Must be able to spend at least 20% of the day standing and 20% of the day walking on surfaces such as concrete, wood, and metal and sometimes on slippery, wet surfaces.
