In its fourth generation of family leadership, Allied Logistics views sustainability as “the right thing to do,” for customers, the environment and business.
“Sustainability is here to stay,” said Allied Realty President Rebecca Polan. “Our customers and our communities expect us to be active participants in this evolving discipline.”
Allied in recent years has launched a string of sustainability initiatives, including waste segregation and recycling; higher efficiency lighting and tracking; and carbon emission savings based on freight consolidation.
Now the company is going a step further. Allied’s Strategic Management Group earlier this year tasked Jeff Smith, the company’s director of strategic analysis, with formalizing the sustainability efforts. He is chairman of the company’s new Sustainability Committee, which includes Polan as vice chairwoman and Brandi Bane, Laura Davis and Jeffrey Smith in Waynesboro, Va.; Greta Preece in Nitro, Steve Smith in Kenova, Matt Zahn in Huntington and Steve Snider in Parkersburg.
The panel will develop sustainability plans for company presidents to consider and lead sessions with employees to educate them on the program and solicit their ideas.
The committee additionally produced a corporate sustainability statement that is available online.
Smith also is chairman of the International Warehouse and Logistics Association’s Sustainability Council and has led a steering committee to compile a program for members of the group.
